Sure, it might be best known for skyscrapers and luxury resorts, but Abu Dhabi holidays can offer so much more. Not that we’re against taking advantage of the ample fine dining and luxe lounging on offer in the capital of the United Arab Emirates – there’s always time for a mojito by the pool – but there are also some amazing once-in-a-lifetime experiences you shouldn’t miss in the city.

Of course, there’s the iconic Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque (a must-do) and the amazing theme parks – world’s fastest rollercoaster anyone? – but how about doing an indoor skydive or paying a visit to the world’s largest falcon hospital? Challenge yourself with a climb up to the Jebel Hafeet peak or an afternoon in the desert ‘surfing’ on the largest sand dunes in the UAE – don’t forget to refuel with an all-you-can eat night brunch.

Spot dolphins at the pristine public beaches, snap cheetahs, giraffes and oryxes on a wildlife drive or hop in a kayak and explore the natural mangrove forests – look out for the local foxes and flamingos! If nature isn’t your thing, how about unleashing your inner Lewis Hamilton and going for a spin around the Yas Marina Circuit in a Ferrari, or check out the hipster-friendly art exhibits at Warehouse421?

Basically, what we’re saying is there’s a lot of cool stuff to do in Abu Dhabi – but a poolside cabana isn’t a bad place to start.

Sunshine or… more sunshine?

The Winter months of November to March are ideal for getting out and exploring the desert. If it’s beach time you want, October and April are sunny, but not overwhelmingly so. While the height of summer (May-Aug) may not be the best time to visit Abu Dhabi for those who struggle in the heat, it’s a great time to enjoy all of the air-conditioned indoor activities with no crowds.
