Fuerteventura Travel Guide

Forget everything you know about the Canary Islands. Well, most of it, at least. Fuerteventura’s landscape isn’t entirely dominated by lava flows and black sands. Which is an excellent start if you like your beach exploits to have that classic, tropical feel. Things do get a smidge barren in-land. Ideal if you do still fancy the sharp thrill of exploring the slopes of a dormant volcano or two. But here, there are miles and miles of sand dunes and turquoise sea lapped shore to revel in. Dive from it, sunbathe on it or catch a trade wind and windsurf from it. Whatever you do on Fuerteventura, make at least a little time to get coastal.

For folk who like to get a little history in with their winter, or summer, sun. There’s the antiquated (by Fuerteventura standards) streets of Betancuria. THE place to cure any homogenised resort ills, the cobbled streets put you on authentic turf and offer a glimpse into life away from breakfast buffets and aqua aerobics. On the activity front, you’ve got a mansion full of secrets to unravel, hidden caves to find and a leisurely windmill route to follow. Holidays in Fuerteventura are full of surprises, they just take a little tracking down.

Fuerteventura forecast

How hot do you like your sands? Summers here aren’t for the shade lovers among us. Happily, the year round sun and temperatures that dip as low as 18 in February means that’s there’s a best time to visit Fuerteventura for everyone. Between June and September delivers on tropical heat without the long haul flight.

Discover the real Fuerteventura

There’s a real Fuerteventura that’s managed to escape the push for resort developments and tourist-friendly attractions. Betancuria is the place to peer at the island’s past – via cobbles and architecture. Though, there’s just as much realness to be found on the coast. This is an island that loves its watersports.

Fuerteventura’s traditional cuisine relies heavily on homegrown crops. At times, that can seem a little too goat-centric, but don’t swerve the Canarian restaurants. It’s a real chance to try a taste of the island away from the ex-pat scene that favours a nice roast and a fry up.

Despite the seemingly endless stretches of sand to explore, Fuerteventura holidays aren’t exclusively limited to coastal fun. Yes, the scuba diving’s top notch, but island secrets, volcanoes, windmills and unique interior landscapes are all on the agenda. Road trips are the best shout, but then, aren’t they always?

Fuerteventura’s an island that likes to keep many of its best bits under wraps. Sure, a bit of Google-sleuthing will serve you well. But sometimes, it’s nice to be given a few pointers. We’ve got the island intel you need to track down a few haunts you won’t find in the leaflet stand at the airport.

More of the Canary Islands

Volcanic topography, hot, hot beaches and trade winds that bring the searing summer temperatures to the perfect sunbathing levels. The Canary Islands ask little more of you than to bring your best poolside fashion and a sense of sloth. But, do a little digging and you’ll discover each island has its unique secrets and surprises to share. These islands were built for adventure, it’s a shame so few get to see beyond the end of their sun loungers.
