A city once divided, Berlin is now thriving. Germany’s capital and largest city has had more historical moments happen in it in the last century than some places manage in millennia, yet the people who pulse through the city live entirely in the present. Forward thinking, green, and with one of the highest standards of living in the world, Berlin is an ideal place to spend your hard-earned break.

The list of must-sees here is endless. Of course, there’s the much-vaunted nightlife, with the city packed to the brim with excellent dive bars, classy cocktail joints, and nightclubs that are open for days at a time. Visitors who prefer the daylight hours can indulge in the hundreds of architectural wonders that line the streets, as well as enough great restaurants to rival any global city. There’s also elegant museums, stunning parks, and some truly astounding places to sit back and enjoy the view. It may have only reunified in our lifetime, but when it comes to great destinations, Berlin is here to stay.

Weather in Berlin

Berlin is like many central European cities: cold in the winter and warm in the summer. The climate can get humid so there’s often frost in the colder months, and if you go during hotter times of year it can feel even warmer than it really is. This also means there’s consistent rainfall, although less over summer. Spring and autumn are generally mild but can get chilly – so unless you’re going in the middle of July we’d recommend a coat.

Discover the real Berlin

Over three million people make up the city’s lifeblood. It’s a vast network of different neighbourhoods, cultures, and identities, so getting to know the real Berlin can seem overwhelming. However, there are some things that are so quintessential to the German capital you’ll be kicking yourself if you don’t get a chance to do them. With Orbzii, you’ll get the lowdown on the best Berlin experiences, and how to indulge in them. You just need to read ahead.

Where to begin with a city like Berlin? The city has a plethora of places to go and things to do, meaning no matter what kind of tourist you are you’re never going to run out of activities. The more highbrow can head to the dozens of galleries, museums, or modern art spaces that are all over the city; those looking for a bit of serenity in the hustle and bustle are able to wander through vast green spaces; and there are enough shopping streets and centres that those looking for some retail therapy won’t be disappointed. Even hikers and wanderers have easy access to the natural surroundings that encircle the city. No matter what you’re keen to do on your German holiday, you’ll be able to do it in Berlin.

Food in Berlin is indescribable. There’s every type of cuisine you could hope for, with starred restaurants right next to cheap eats. And, if you’re up until the wee hours, there’s plenty of currywurst to go around from late-night kebab shops and street vendors.

The drink scene is second-to-none too. World class mixologists shake and strain all over the city, and of course the Germans always deliver when it comes to beer. The only hard choice you’ll have to make is what to drink (and how much).

There’s an overwhelming amount of information on Berlin floating out there, and while some of it’s useful, a lot of it isn’t. At Orbzii we’ve gone above and beyond (and into and around, sometimes) to make sure our guides and tips are the sort you’d get from a long-time local. So, instead of frantically opening dozens of tabs, you can figure out everything you want to do right here.

More of Portugal

Back on the mainland, Portugal delivers far more than the fortnight by the pool it’s become famous for. Yes, the beaches are great, but head inland and there’s a side of Portugal few can see from their sun lounger. The national parks just call out for hiking and wildlife adventures. Castles conjure up Medieval fantasies and vineyards provide the perfect pitstop to sip away an hour or two.
