Myths, legends, labyrinths and Greek gods are just part of the Crete storyline. Sunshine has the starring role, of course. But a trip to this island is about much more than getting a good tan. Adventures come at you from every corner of the map. Mountains call to be climbed, gorges lead you to secret beaches and the waters hold surprises that go beyond colourful corals and clear, clear waters. Adrenaline rushes, a nightlife scene that needs no introduction and cosmopolitan cities that have been trading their wares since the Minoans landed could make Crete feel a little frenetic. Thank heavens then for the lazy days you can while away on a vineyard’s tasting terrace, ambling through the botanical gardens or tiptoeing through nature reserves carpeted with sea daffodils.

And if you’re just jetting in for the beaches? You’re golden. Hundreds of miles of coastline give you countless options. Sands backed by the dappled shade of Europe’s largest palm forest, pink-hued sea beds to snorkel over and surf spots to catch a wave on. All that could tempt you to stay on the island, if only there weren’t outposts to island hop to. Of course, you will get that tan we mentioned while you’re here, but you’ll have far more to put on your postcard than that.

Weather in Crete

Crete is Greece’s summer isle – though there’s a northerly wind that loves this island too. Swerve August – to avoid its cooling breeze and you’ll find plenty of sunshine between May and October.  The best time to visit Crete? July – for zero rain days and the highest temperatures.

Discover the Real Crete

Swerve the resorts and party crowd in the north to find the real Crete. Though, this island does like a party, albeit one without glowsticks and fishbowl cocktails. For something a little more low key, villages, vineyards and family-run tavernas tap into the real island life you’re looking for.

Crete’s coves and coastline harbour untold riches for those that explore by flipper, boat or kayak. Though, don’t discount the inland treasures. Myth, legend and an apparition or two provide an interesting twist to local landmarks. And, there’s even a cheeky little ski scene brewing, if you climb high enough.

Cretan food may be simple, but it can’t be beaten on flavour. Embrace the pared back plates by ordering from the seafood menu. Your catch will no doubt just be lightly grilled – but all the better for it. Then? Flit from village to village to try local cheeses and pair it with a home-grown wine.

This isn’t an island that likes to shout its riches from the rooftops. Socials, websites, and promotion in general, take a backseat to just about everything. How then, can you allow more time to enjoy Crete? Dip into our tip section. We’ve snuffled out the best of Crete, just for you.

Is there anything more idyllic than island hopping between craggy spots gently lapped by turquoise seas? Platefuls of the Mediterranean diet, villages that beg to be ambled through and intriguing history to keep you exploring for months – if only you had the time. Greece is a travel paradise peppered with resorts that make it oh so hard to leave the welcoming arms of their sunloungers. Do peek out beyond the pool bar now and then though, you’ll be glad you did.
