Fuerteventura

Forget everything you know about the Canary Islands. Well, most of it, at least. Fuerteventura’s landscape isn’t entirely dominated by lava flows and black sands. Which is an excellent start if you like your beach exploits to have that classic, tropical feel. Things do get a smidge barren in-land. Ideal if you do still fancy the sharp thrill of exploring the slopes of a dormant volcano or two. But here, there are miles and miles of sand dunes and turquoise sea lapped shore to revel in. Dive from it, sunbathe on it or catch a trade wind and windsurf from it. Whatever you do on Fuerteventura, make at least a little time to get coastal.

For folk who like to get a little history in with their winter, or summer, sun. There’s the antiquated (by Fuerteventura standards) streets of Betancuria. THE place to cure any homogenised resort ills, the cobbled streets put you on authentic turf and offer a glimpse into life away from breakfast buffets and aqua aerobics. On the activity front, you’ve got a mansion full of secrets to unravel, hidden caves to find and a leisurely windmill route to follow. Holidays in Fuerteventura are full of surprises, they just take a little tracking down.
