Want to get the lowdown on the very best things to do in Stockholm? If you are ready to step into a stylish Swedish fairytale (with undertones of futuristic frissions) then a trip to the bewitching Swedish capital might well be on the cards.

Stockholm is a city like no other – it consists of 14 main islands, however in total, there are over 30,000 little islands that make up its sprawling archipelago. The locals fondly refer to them as the ‘skärgården’ and the best way to explore them is via the ferry where there are pristine lakes, verdant parks, lush forests and more.

From the classic contours of its baroque and rococo buildings to its quirky contemporary structures like the Avicii Arena, this island city is endlessly charming and truly a sight to behold, especially when viewed from the water.

Asides sailing through this beautiful archipelago, what are the best things to do in Stockholm? Let’s find out!

Explore the Old Town

Weave your way through the cobbled narrow streets of Gamla Stan – the old town which dates back to the 13th century.

Here you will see intriguing ochre and mustard-hued buildings (including the very apartment that two members of the Swedish supergroup ABBA lived in!) the Royal Palace, Stockholm Cathedral, and a plethora of world-class museums.

Of course, we can’t forget that this is also one of the main shopping areas, which is definitely one of our favourite things to do in Stockholm.

Get into nature

Stockholm absolutely stand out when it comes to its first-class art galleries and museums, restaurants, and shopping.

As an island(s) city, you will be spoiled for choice with some amazing nature reserves, parks and hiking trails to walk around.

We love the absolutely stunning Tyresta National Park which has an old growth forest with ancient pine trees, lakes and ruins that make for a fantastic hike: plus it’s only 2km from the heart of the city.

If you prefer to be on the water, there are ample opportunities to kayak, canoe or even SUP on the lakes throughout Stockholm.

Alternatively, you can enjoy any of these water-borne activities at a national park within the city past palaces and beautiful green areas.

Love the water but prefer your feet to stay on dry ground? Take a stroll to the pretty waterfront from Nybroviken along to Strandvägen, which is a lovely 19th-century esplanade lined with elegant converted mansions.
